About Me
Design Manager and graphic designer at FBCHi, I’m Jay Laya, a multidisciplinary designer and developer based in Calgary, Alberta.
I work across digital and print, with a focus on creating clear, thoughtful experiences for complex ideas. My work spans web design and development, branding, information design, editorial, and visual communication. I enjoy working at the intersection of design and technology, turning ideas into experiences that are not only visually engaging, but useful and easy to understand.
I was born in the Philippines and have called Canada home for more than a decade. Moving from the hot, tropical weather of the Philippines to Calgary’s Rocky Mountain winters was definitely an adjustment, but somewhere along the way, I learned to appreciate the snow, the mountains, and the occasional Chinook.
My background has shaped the way I think about design. I’m interested in how culture, context, and accessibility influence the way people understand and interact with information. Whether I’m designing a website, building a brand, or putting together a publication, I’m always looking for ways to make things clearer, more intentional, and more human.
When I’m not designing, you’ll probably find me exploring Calgary, cooking something, playing a game, or finding an excuse to avoid going outside when it’s -30°C.
